How many battery energy storage projects have won a bid?
Over a gigawatt of bids from battery storage project developers have been successful in the first-ever competitive auctions for low-carbon energy capacity held in Japan. A total 1.67GW of projects won contracts, including 32 battery energy storage system (BESS) totalling 1.1GW and three pumped hydro energy storage (PHES) projects totalling 577MW.
What happens if a supplier is shortlisted for energy storage system equipment?
In the future, as specific projects are implemented and procurement needs clarified, the shortlisted suppliers will be directly invited to engage in secondary competition, either through negotiated procurement or competitive bidding, to determine the final supplier for the required energy storage system equipment.
How much money will be paid out for low-carbon technologies?
An annual budget of JPY233 billion (US$1.5 billion) will be paid out across the successful bidding units from eligible low-carbon technologies. Also eligible were nuclear generation, biomass, ammonia co-firing and hydrogen co-firing generation. A separate capacity auction for gas-fired capacity from liquid natural gas (LNG) also took place.
